Something About Mary

Christian Perspective: The Rightful Respect for Mary as a Sinner in Need of a Savior

Introduction:
The veneration of Mary, the mother of Jesus, has been a topic of theological debate for centuries. While Catholic traditions have elevated Mary to a position of quasi-deity, it is essential to approach this subject from a Reformed Christian perspective. Our aim is to explore the right and proper respect and veneration of Mary as a natural-born sinner who, like all humanity, was in need of a savior.

Understanding Mary's Role and Identity:
Mary played a crucial role in God's redemptive plan as the chosen vessel to bear the Son of God. However, it is important to acknowledge that Mary herself was not divine. She was a humble servant of God, chosen by His grace to fulfill a specific purpose. Luke 1:46-47 reveals Mary's own acknowledgment of her need for a savior: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." This verse clearly demonstrates Mary's understanding of her own sinfulness and her reliance on God's saving grace.

The Christian View of Mary:
The Christian view emphasizes the biblical teachings that affirm the sinfulness of all humanity, including Mary. Romans 3:23 states, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This verse applies to Mary as well. The Reformers recognized the need to honor and respect Mary for her role in salvation history, but without attributing to her a status that belongs solely to God.

Rightful Respect and Veneration:
Respecting and venerating Mary does not require attributing to her a pseudo-deity or praying to her as an intercessor. Instead, we can honor her as a faithful servant of God who demonstrated obedience, humility, and trust. Mary's example serves as an inspiration for all Christians to submit to God's will and trust in His promises.

By focusing on Mary's role within the narrative of salvation history, we can celebrate her as a significant figure without detracting from the glory and sovereignty of God. Just as we honor other faithful individuals in biblical history, such as Abraham or Moses, we can appreciate Mary's obedience and faithfulness within the context of God's redemptive plan.

Redirecting Veneration to God Alone:
The Protestant Christian perspective reminds us that our ultimate focus should be on God alone. Mary herself would have never desired or encouraged the veneration that some Catholic traditions have bestowed upon her. In Luke 1:46-55, known as the Magnificat, Mary praises God for His great works and faithfulness. Her words point us to the greatness and glory of God, not to her own exaltation.

Conclusion:
In the Christian perspective, the right and proper respect and veneration of Mary as a sinner in need of a savior redirects our focus to the central figure of salvation: Jesus Christ. Mary's role in the redemptive plan should be honored and appreciated, but without elevating her to a position that detracts from the worship and adoration that belongs solely to God. By recognizing Mary's humanity and her reliance on God's grace, we can maintain a balanced and biblically grounded perspective on her significance in our faith.
